Public health officials are reaching out to Wedgewood residents to poll their concerns about the health impacts of landfills in the neighborhood. This week, the Florida Department of Health mailed the attached community update to about 650 property owners near the Rolling Hills Construction & Demolition Debris landfill. It summaries a recent report that DOH completed about the health impacts of hydrogen sulfide gas. The gas is given off by decomposing drywall and it has been detected by air quality monitors at the Wedgewood Community Center next to Rolling Hills. The update mailed to property owners summarizes the department’s draft health consultation report, solicits public comment on this report, and announces a public meeting at 3 p.m. March 27 at the Marie Young Wedgewood Community Center, 6405 Wagner Road, to discuss the report. The full preliminary report is available on the Health Department website, EscambiaHealth.com and on Escambia County’s website, MyEscambia.com. The department said it will issue a final report after reviewing public comments on the preliminary conclusions. The public can make comments until April 30 by calling (877) 798-2772, by e-mailing: [email protected], or by writing to: Public Health Toxicology Florida Department of Health 4052 Bald Cypress Way, Bin A-12 Tallahassee, FL 32399-1720
