Author Robert Lupton is in Pensacola today, meeting with local leaders and outreach agencies, and beginning a series of presentations on his faith-based approach to helping the impoverished. Robert Lupton wrote “Toxic Charity: How Nonprofits Hurt Those They Help (And How to Reverse It),” a faith-based book on changing charitable outreach. He is also the founder of Focused Community Strategies Urban Ministry in Atlanta. Lupton’s message is based on more than 40 years of outreach work and community development in inner-city Atlanta and surrounding areas. He encourages a “charity with dignity” concept, where the underprivileged are given an opportunity to earn what they receive, as well as form relationships with those who are helping them. Local nonprofit and faith-based organizations believe his programs could be successful here. The Pensacola Collective for Renewing the City and First Baptist Church, First United Methodist Church, Trinity Presbyterian Church, and United Ministries are sponsoring the event. Lupton will be in Pensacola on Feb. 5. He is giving three presentations targeted to a variety of audiences, including government and local leaders, outreach groups, as well as the public. Admission for all is free. Click here to watch Mollye Barrows & Michael Spooneybarger’s story on how one community is using Lupton’s ideas.
