UWF honors new professors

The University of West Florida on Friday will honor two faculty members at a distinguished lecture series. Barbara Larson and Michelle Williamson, who both became full professors, will receive special recognition during UWF’s Rite of Passage Lecture series. The 2 p.m. event will be at the Argonaut Athletic Club. The series offers them the chance to share their experiences outside the classroom with colleagues, students, friends and members of the community. Larson, an arts professor, will present a lecture titled, “Considering the Two Cultures Debate.” Larson wrote “The Dark Side of Nature: Science, Society and Fantastic in the Work of Odilon Redon. She was the lead editor of “The Art of Evolution: Darwin, Darwinisms and Visual Culture, and Darwin and Theories of Aesthetics and Cultural History. Larson has contributed catalogue essays to several international exhibitions and is published widely in journals on issues in art and science around 1900. A professor of government, Williams will present a lecture called, “Climbing Every Mountain, To Do What I Love and Love What I Do.” Her research includes far right parties; nationalism and ethnic politics; political and party systems; political institutions; European politics; and scholarship of teaching and learning with emphasis on information literacy. Her books include “The Multicultural Dilemma: Migration, Ethnic Politics and State Intermediation and “The Impact of Radical Right-wing Parties in West European Democracies. She also has written several scholarly journals on politics and nationalism in Europe. The lecture series is free and open to the public.
