VALDOSTA, Ga. – The University of West Florida women’s basketball team defeated the Valdosta State University Lady Blazers 75-71 Saturday night in Valdosta, Georgia. With the win, the Argonauts (19-7, 16-6 GSC) have earned the second seed in the Gulf South Conference Tournament.

“I’m very proud of our effort tonight,” said head coach Stephanie Lawrence Yelton. “We hustled after loose balls and rebounded well. Having four players score double-digits is a great sign heading into the tournament next week.”

West Florida and the Lady Blazers started the game trading baskets, but with 12:57 left in the first half, UWF went on a 9-3 run and never looked back from there. The Argos would never lose the lead during the half and led by 10 with three minutes remaining. However, a 10-2 run by VSU would bring the Lady Blazers within two at 37-35 at halftime. UWF was led by Brianna Williams (Minneapolis, Minn./University of North Dakota) who scored eight points in the half.

UWF only lost the lead once in the second half after the Lady Blazers went on a 7-2 run with 5:31 remaining. However, the Argos would respond by scoring six straight points to regain the lead. West Florida would eventually earn their 19th win of the season by score of 75-71.

Four Argos scored in double-digits for West Florida, including a game-high 19 points from Katie Bobos (Lowell, Ind./Lowell HS) and led with eight rebounds as well. Jasmine Wigfall (Orlando, Fla./Timber Creek HS) added 13 points for UWF, followed by Williams with 12 points and Kyla Muhammad (Pensacola, Fla./Pensacola HS) with 10 points.

The Argos will begin post-season play on March 3, when they host Shorter University for the first round of the GSC Tournament.
