Turns out there is money in history after all. On Nov. 5, the University of West Florida and Historical Research Associates Inc. will host a partnership celebration and grand opening of a Pensacola office of the company that does work in corporate histories, litigation, Native American tribal issues and cultural resources management compliance. As part of the event, UWF and HRA representatives will sign a licensing agreement for Next Exit History, a mobile app developed by UWF faculty researchers that provides information about more than 55,000 historical sites across the country. This marks the first licensing agreement to be signed from a social sciences department at UWF. Next Exit History is the brainchild of UWF professors Jay Clune and Patrick Moore. The two thought back in 2006 that they could develop an app to highlight historic sites off the beaten path for about $5,000. That investment ended up closer to $250,000 and six years in time, but it turns out to have been worth it. Next Exit History partners with Historical Research Associates to research and compile information about historic locations. That quality control in regards to the information, Moore says, sets Next Exit History apart from crowd-sourced apps. Read more about the app’s evolution here.
