The No. 4 seed West Florida women’s basketball team defeated No. 5 seed Benedict 78-58 in the NCAA Tournament South Region Quarterfinals Friday night at Fred DeLay Gymnasium. UWF (20-8) advanced to the NCAA South Region Semifinals for the third time in school history. The Argonauts have never advanced to an NCAA Final. “From top to bottom I thought we played a great game tonight,” UWF coach Stephanie Lawrence Yelton said. “We started out on fire in the first half. We were able to stop Benedict’s run in the second half, weather that storm and come out with a huge win today.” UWF outrebounded Benedict (23-7), the nation’s top team in rebounding average and rebounding margin, 49-35. UWF ended the first half on a 15-0 run to lead 41-19 at halftime. The Argos held the lead the final 10 minutes of the first half and never relinquished it in the second half. UWF shot its third-highest field goal percentage of the season, shooting 47.5 percent. Jasmine Wigfall (Orlando, Fla./Timber Creek HS) scored a career-high 24 points while shooting 71.4 percent (10-for-14) from the field. She added seven rebounds and three assists. Brianna Williams (Minneapolis, Minn./North Dakota) recorded a double-double with 11 points and 11 rebounds, and Katie Bobos (Lowell, Ind./Lowell HS) scored 13 points with seven rebounds. The Argos have now won 20 games in a season for the fifth time in school history. UWF is guaranteed to finish with its highest winning percentage since it finished with a .767 in 2005-06. “Winning tonight’s game was a huge stepping stone for our program,” Yelton said. “Winning a game in the NCAA Tournament, advancing to the second round and surpassing that 20-win mark were milestones for us.” UWF will play No. 1 seed Union (Tenn.) in the NCAA South Region Semifinal Saturday, March 14, at 7:30 p.m. in Jackson. Union defeated No. 8 seed Albany State 92-83 in the regional quarterfinal Friday. UWF went 1-1 this season and 1-1 last season against the Lady Bulldogs. The Argos are 1-1 against UU at Fred DeLay gymnasium in the past two seasons and are one of three teams to defeat UU at home in the past two years. The Lady Bulldogs are 15-0 at home this year. With a win Saturday, UWF would play the winner of No. 6 seed Rollins and No. 2 seed Nova Southeastern in the NCAA South Region Championship Monday, March 16, at 7 p.m. in Jackson.
