Sen. Don Gaetz, R-Niceville, filed a bill Tuesday that raises questions about the future of the state Division of Vocational Rehabilitation and would require the agency to come up with a plan to improve performance. The bill (SB 802) would repeal on June 30, 2016, part of state law that designates the division to carry out the federal Vocational Rehabilitation Act of 1973, which is aimed at preventing discrimination against people with disabilities. The bill says lawmakers could re-enact the state law after reviewing whether the division meets performance goals. The proposal would require the division to develop a plan that would include goals such as increasing the number of people receiving services, increasing the number of people receiving postsecondary workforce education and increasing the number of people receiving industry certifications. The bill will be considered during the legislative session that starts March 3.
