PRESS RELEASE -- The 11th annual Pensacola Open Wheelchair Tennis Championship is March 26 – 30 (Wed – Sun) at Roger Scott Tennis Center as part of the NEC Wheelchair Tennis Tour. Defending Men’s Champion, Argentine Gustavo Fernandez, is returning along with 2013 Women’s Dutch Champion Marjolein Buis.  Six of the world’s Top 10 women will be competing along with seven of the Top 10 men. The official kick-off is a ‘one-up, one-down’ exhibition Doubles match at Roger Scott at 6 p.m. on March 25 featuring the world’s #1 and #2 men with pros Brian Sakey and Patrick Bateman. David Mayo, the Pensacola Open founder and chairman said, “We have another huge number of players…83 representing 16 countries!  We’ll be the 3rd largest tournament in the country this year.  And our prize money is at a record level of $28,500.”  Pensacola should be proud!” Wheelchair tennis has the same rules as able-bodied tennis except the player is allowed two bounces of the ball. The Pensacola Open offers various draws (Open, A, B, C) allowing all players a chance to compete at a competitive level. The matches are during the day (9am to 5pm) beginning Wednesday, March 26 with the finals on Sunday morning (11am), March 30.  Attendance is free to the public. A tournament of this size requires lots of community support, food, volunteers, ball boys/girls, etc.  Those interested, contact Beverly Mayo at 434-8586 or [email protected].
