PRESS RELEASE — More than 13,941 pounds of food have been given by the Booker T. Washington High School DECA Chapter to feed the hungry in our area. The donations, given to Manna Food Pantries, were collected through a DECA Statewide project called “Helping Hands.” A total of 20 high school DECA Chapters statewide conducted food drives from October 2013 until the final donations were collected at DECA’s State Competition in Orlando last week. DECA is an international association of over 180,000 marketing students. “DECA has more than 8,500 members in the state of Florida. The ‘Helping Hands’ Project was created by DECA students to target state charities and collectively make a greater impact with their donation,” said Carla Ross, DECA Advisor, Booker T. Washington High School. Washington High DECA Chapter has been a longtime supporter of MANNA. Local students persuaded the other schools across the state to designate MANNA as one of two recipients of the statewide project. They also secured free transportation via an 18 wheeler that delivered the food to MANNA earlier this week. “DECA decided to help the hungry in our community because we realize the difficult situations many families are experiencing during this tough economy. We thought by doing this charitable act we could aid the ones who need it most,” said Mikyla Cunningham, Washington High DECA Student President. “This demonstrates great compassion, leadership and commitment by our high school students to help their community and people in need,” said DeDe Flounlacker, Executive Director, MANNA. “Thanks to DECA, over 2,780 people will be helped from their efforts.” MANNA operates five pantries in Escambia and Santa Rosa counties, helping over 42,000 people in need last year. A local grassroots organization, MANNA depends on donations to help those in need.
