The local political world was roiled this fall by the news that a federal grand jury is looking into contracts between the City of Pensacola and Jerry Pate Design, as well as documents related to travel expenses for Mayor Ashton Hayward and his then chief of staff, John Asmar.
Based on the documents subpoenaed from the City of Pensacola, at least part of the federal inquiry mirrors complaints raised by former Pensacola City Councilwoman Maren DeWeese.
The State Attorney’s Office in early 2013 reviewed concerns DeWeese raised and did not find anything that rose to the level of criminal conduct.
The grand jury does not comment on its proceedings.
